When you invest in granite countertops, you want to do everything in your power to keep them looking great for years and years to come. However, when it comes to your kitchen countertops, they can take a real beating if you don’t properly care for them. Fortunately, taking care of your granite kitchen countertops is simple once you know what you are doing. In our previous blog, we started going over dos and don’ts of caring for your granite countertops. In this blog, we will continue the list to ensure that you know everything about granite countertop care.
DO: Use coasters under beverages.
While you may be able to put cans, glasses, and bottles directly on your granite without causing damage, why risk it? Coasters prevent you from leaving marks on your granite countertops, and also provide your beverage with traction to prevent spills. While coasters are an absolute requirement for marble countertops and less so with granite, give yourself added peace of mind and your countertops added protection by using coasters.

DON’T: Sit or stand on your countertops.
Unlike laminate countertops, your granite kitchen countertops are very hard and not flexible. This means that if you put too much weight on any one spot of your countertop, it could result in a crack. Avoid causing damage to your countertops by not standing or sitting on them, and making sure that no one else does.
Do: Use a soft cloth or sponge for clean up.
When you have a spill on your kitchen countertop, it is best to use a special granite cleaner. However, if you don’t have a time, a soft cloth or sponge soaked in hot water is sufficient to clean your countertops. However, avoid using dish soap on your countertops. While dish soap won’t technically cause damage to granite, soap build up over time will cause your countertops to dull. Avoid this by using a soft cloth or sponge with water without soap to clean up any basic spills or messes.
DON’T: Put hot pans or pots directly on your granite.
Technically speaking, it is possible to put a hot pan directly on your granite countertop without causing damage. Granite is an incredibly durable material, and in most cases, putting something hot on it isn’t going to cause damage; in very rare cases, it may experience “thermal shock” which will crack the stone. However, you must also consider the fact that any grit that comes between the pot and the countertop may cause scratching. While granite can take a beating, it is susceptible to smaller surface scratches in high-use areas, such as around the stove or sink. While this is rare, it is possible, so exercise extra caution and always use hot pads or trivets underneath hot pans or pots.
